The Para Marketing Company, brought to you by the family that built ESPN, presents a story of our beginnings.
In September 1978, Don Rasmussen embarked on a business venture that would not only change his life forever, but he lives of sports fans around the world.
At a family gathering, Don, along with his dad and brother, became the founders of ESPN. On September 7th 1979, the launch of ESPN radically changed the landscape of TV. Sports fans everywhere had their sports.
Just as Don's part in creating ESPN helped to forever change the television industry, so now are his grandsons carrying on that legacy. Nathan Halydier, along with his brother Garrett, founded the Para Marketing Company. Established on the same principles of integrity and quality service their grandfather exemplified, Nathan and Garrett aim to change the nature of the marketing industry.
Meet the Founders
Nathan: Our goal is bring affordability and affordable services to small businesses.
Garrett: That's right. So the vision for the Para Marketing Company is to become that international corporation who has the power and the leverage and the connections of Madison Avenue of all of the large marketing firms, but to use it to provide strategy, to provide insight, to provide intellectual capital, and to provide services that they wouldn't otherwise have to small and medium-size businesses wherever you are in the US, and hopefully, in the world.
Their second goal was to break down the barriers of traditional marketing companies, and bridge the gap between accessibility and affordability.
Nathan: Our grandfather, my great-grandfather, my great-uncle, the three of them together built ESPN, but they didn't build it in a corner, or in a basement. They built it out of a basement, but they built it by advertising. They built it by marketing. They built it by letting people know who they are, and about what they do, and getting people interested. And you do that through marketing.
Garrett: And when we say marketing, we mean a lot of different things. We mean advertising, we mean design, we mean the integration of those things, we mean strategy, we mean your target market, the people you're going after.
Nathan: Imagine if you had your own internal marketing department with your own web developers and graphic designers, copywriters and ad buyers, that can be at your disposal to help you build your brand, help you advertise, to help you market to your customers, to help get the word out. That's what we bring to the table.
And their third goal, and perhaps most important: to carry on the legacy of their grandfather.
Nathan: If we continue to walk the path that our family has walked before us, and that we walked at a very young age, we too can build a successful business that truly helps people.
Garrett: We've watched our father, we've watched our grandparents go through hard times in their lives in a variety of ways, and how integrity is not only the easy path, but always the right path, and it puts them in a good state afterwords. It's the reason they have been successful. So we at the Para Marketing Company value those particular things of creativity, work ethic, and integrity.
Success takes passion, dedication, and hard work. It takes vision, and perseverance. It's what the Para Marketing Company was founded on. It's who we are.
When Don Rasmussen first ventured into building ESPN with his family, he knew the challenges that lay ahead. Skeptics and naysayers would often bring up how people would not want to watch sports all day or that there wouldn’t be enough content to air sports 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This didn’t deter Don. In fact, Don had spent most of his life proving people that he could not only accomplish things they told him he couldn’t, but that he could far exceed standard expectations.
Don knew that just because something hadn’t been done before didn’t mean it could never be done — and be done well. His determination and perseverance propelled him to success — in college, in the military, and in his career.
Clearly this determination and entrepreneurial inclination has been passed down from Don to his grandsons, Nathan and Garrett. Despite warnings from outsiders on the difficulty of the marketing business, the brothers pushed forth in creating The Para Marketing Company, whose unique structure is helping to redefine the industry landscape.
When Don joined the initiative to create ESPN, he did so hoping to fulfill his father’s dream of creating a family business — a legacy that the Rasmussens could be a part of for years to come. Perhaps the true legacy that was created was that of pursuing dreams and creating successful companies that will leave their mark on the world for the foreseeable future.
Nathan and Garrett are just beginning to write the story of The Para Marketing Company and its impact on the marketing industry. Don, however, recently published his autobiography Just A Guy, detailing his background, involvement establishing ESPN, and enjoyment of his golden years. When you first wake up in the morning, you probably don't even realize how much brand presence you're subject to. From the moment that you hit your alarm clock, to the brushing of your teeth, or even choosing the cereal you're going to have that morning for breakfast. Our subconscious is in sensory overload from all the marketing we see, and half of the time we don't even realize it.
Now think about this: nearly every item you have used today has been marketed to you. Each one was marketed to fulfill a need. You are living, breathing proof that marketing efforts work. So why not put that success to work for you and your business?
You see, that's where we come in. Our team is here to streamline your marketing efforts so that your business prospers. What we hear from our clients is that it's difficult to figure out what has and hasn't worked. They'll say things like, "Yeah, my sales went up a few months ago, but I don't know why. I might have had an ad running, but I don't know if that's what caused it, or if it was something else." Or they'll say, "Yeah, I have a marketing budget. But it's spent in fifteen different places, and I don't know what the return on the investment is."
And you know what? We get it. You need results - measurable results, and more than that, you need a solution that can maximize the impact of your marketing budget. And that's why our team serves as your marketing department. Our experts are dedicated to figuring out what methods work best for your business. And we drive those sales, and leads, or whatever other metrics you're hoping to achieve to your business with custom, integrated marketing portfolios that are tailored to optimize your success.
It is time for your brand to be recognized, for the uniqueness of your brand to stand out, and that's what we do. We would love to help you. Welcome to the Para Marketing Company.

To save money, business owners can manage marketing themselves, but who has time to manage 50 different advertising, marketing, and vendor contracts effectively?
To get quality marketing, businesses use large, traditional marketing firms, but who has the money to pay a large marketing firm excessive hourly rates with little proof of impact?
To get quality marketing at a good price, businesses hire a "marketing department," but adding full-time staff to do marketing is a novelty only large companies can justify.
Everyone knows that a business needs marketing to grow. The problem is that getting quality marketing can be expensive and time-consuming.
Let's compare a big company and a little company.
A big company either hires a marketing department or spends an incredible amount of money on a marketing firm. A small company is left fending for themselves, having to create their own marketing strategy. But where do you start?
That's where we come in. We are a firm dedicated to bringing the services that a large company gets at a price that a small business can afford. We have a team of experts, designers, and account managers who will serve as your company's marketing department.
Our team will custom design a three-tier portfolio to handle all of your marketing needs, starting with brand development, from logos, marketing research, to print media solutions. Second is brand presence, which is websites, social media marketing, and mobile applications. Thirdly, brand advertising, including online ads, local listings, and online reputation services. After we meet with you to determine which services best fit your needs, we will develop a custom marketing strategy known as your marketing portfolio, and then implement it for you, so you can spend your time developing your business.
From research to development to implementation, we are here to make marketing happen for you so you can focus on growing your company and servicing your clients. That's who we are and we'd love to meet you.
Welcome to the Para Marketing Company.
Tyler Ryan: Now, the old "if you build it, they will come" theory may apply to baseball fields, but not so much when it comes to websites, as anyone who's ever designed one for a small business, or even yourself — you know it's slightly more involved than simply buying yourname.com and putting it on the web. Our friends at Para Marketing are actually in the process of building a new platform designed to give companies a bit of an edge. Oh, by the way, they're also looking to the community to help build the whole thing. Nathan joins us here. First and foremost, let's talk about this new platform of actually engaging web people because that really is a misnomer, isn't it? That I can't just put up tylerryan.com and expect millions of people to find me.
Nathan Halydier: Absolutely. And the thing is that on the World Wide Web, there are thousands and thousands of websites, probably millions of websites, and you have to figure out how to drive people to your site. And that's one of the things that we do. We don't just build the websites, we also drive people there.
Tyler Ryan: So, what is this new technology that you guys are developing — we'll talk about that in a second — but you've come up with some new technology. What is that new technology; what's different about that than just a boring old website?
Nathan Halydier: Well, what we're doing is we're trying to figure out how to change a website from being a billboard where it just hosts information and people can come and visit it to where it's actually a point of sale, where it engages people and allows you to actually give a presentation of your product or your service to somebody through your website.
Tyler Ryan: And that's a different platform than is traditionally out there, as well.
Nathan Halydier: Absolutely. We're using a cool new technology called parallax scrolling, which allows it to be a little bit more interactive, a little bit more engaging, things to fly around the screen, to move a little bit, and engage the consumer, helping other companies increase their sales.
Tyler Ryan: How important is SEO — Search Engine Optimization for you kids at home — to that? Is that still a big issue? SEO — that hasn't changed in a while. I've worked a lot with websites, as well, and that's always the buzz.
Nathan Halydier: Absolutely. SEO is extremely important. Unfortunately, Google and some of these other big search engines are making it more and more difficult. It's a moving target these days. So it's one of those things that used to you could do, I could do, anybody could do for their own website. Nowadays, it's one of those things that has become very scientific.
Tyler Ryan: Right, so you actually have to engage if you're looking to drive traffic. You have to engage in services of somebody who's actually is a pro more than just me sticking in some keywords, metadata, and the normal stuff.
Nathan Halydier: Absolutely. And that can actually hurt you more than it can help you nowadays.
Tyler Ryan: Really?
Nathan Halydier: Google has come in and said, "Hey, you guys that are cheating, putting in all that metadata and all that stuff in there — we're not going to allow you to do that anymore." So they've put a lot more rules and made it a little bit more difficult.
Tyler Ryan: That is no fun at all. Alright, well, let's talk about Para Marketing for a second. You're with Para Marketing and the cool thing with this new website and things you're brining in, which is fantastic, but the coolest thing, I think, for viewers and for anybody, is you're bringing jobs in. Like thirty-plus gigs.
Nathan Halydier: Absolutely. In the next three months, we're planning on hiring about thirty new tech professionals. Everything from database architects, front-end developers, back-end developers, sales people, some things like that. We've got some big contracts out of some big parts of the state, and different parts of the country that we're bringing some jobs into Columbia. And so, you can actually apply. We're still looking.
Tyler Ryan: So jobs are there. Some great stuff and some great information on the website, as well. And a whole different way to engage and get your website because it really is more than just — I've built them; I know; it's harder than just putting it up like, "Hey man, here I am!" No. When there's millions of websites out there, you've got to do some extra stuff, so this new technology is very, very cool. And I've got some links for you too, by the way, at WACH.com, not only for the new solutions for websites, but also the gigs. You're looking for sales, IT, tech...
Nathan Halydier: Yep, mostly high-tech jobs and a few sales people. So about twenty-five high-tech and about five sales.
Tyler Ryan: Fantastic stuff. Para Marketing's Nathan here. We're going to get your links set up on WACH.com for your employment. Get yourself a job this morning. What a way to start your July.
